KABUL: Four army service members lost their lives due to severe cold weather in the northeastern Badakhshan, a province located among high mountains bordering Tajikistan and China’s autonomous region of Xinjiang.
Sanaullah Rouhani, provincial police spokesman, confirmed the incident, saying that it happened Friday in the Eshkashem district.
The soldiers were serving at the fourth kandak of border keeping forces and were trapped in heavy storm and snowfall while on their way from Shohada district to Eshkashem, where they succumbed to cold.
The bodies of dead soldiers were found after three days of search as they covered under tons of snow, according to Rouhani, who said that police in the Shohada district with the help of residents pulled the bodies out of snow and handed them to their families.
Qadam Ali, a local police officer had earlier died of cold weather in Shangoog village of the Zibak district, according to provincial officials.
Badakhshan has a long and very cold winter that begins from late October and lasts until late May. Many of the roads linking districts to the provincial capital city of Faizabad are blocked by heavy snow for several months that make problems for the people of mountain-surrounded areas.
