KABUL: At least 83 Taliban rebels have been killed and 18 others were wounded during the latest crackdowns conducted by the Afghan security forces in Southern Kandahar and Ghazni provinces in the past 24 hours, defense officials said Monday.
A group of Taliban attacked Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) positions in Zherai, Arghandab, Panjwaee and Shahwali Kot districts, in which faced strict counterattack by the Afghan forces, said a statement issued by the Ministry of Defense.
65 Taliban insurgents were killed during counterattack only in Kandahar provinces.
A large amount of weapons and ammunition of the enemy were also destroyed as a result of the attacks by security forces, the statement added.
The Afghan National Army (ANA) also repelled a Taliban attack in the Andar district of Ghazni province.
According to the statement, 18 Taliban fighters were killed and 12 others were wounded during retaliation attacks.
Additionally, several vehicles and large amounts of weapons of the enemy were also destroyed.
On the other hand, MoD said that a Taliban commander was arrested with three fighters in Shakardara district of Kabul province. The detention was made on Sunday.
The arrested criminals had been involved in terrorist activities in northern districts of Kabul and engaged in target killings of government employees, according to the statement.
