KABUL: A bomb rigged to a rickshaw has killed 15 people, including 11 children and wounded 20 others in eastern Ghazni province, security officials said on Friday. The deadly bombing comes as violence continues to surge around the country in the wake of peace talks.
Wahidullah Jumazada, spokesman for the Ghazni provincial governor, said the attack took place on Friday afternoon in the Gilan district of the province. According to him the bomb went off after a man driving a motorized rickshaw entered a village to sell goods.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, Tariq Aryan said that the blast occurred when people were gathered to attend a Quran recitation ceremony. He confirmed 15 people were killed and 20 others wounded in the blast. But the provincial officials confirmed 11 children were killed in the blast.
Provincial Governor Spokesman, Jumazada said that the blast occurred via a motorbike selling products.
The children were gathered around the motorbike while the explosion occurred, he added. According to him, 20 underage people were wounded in the blast.
No militant group asserted responsibility for the attack. But the government has often blamed the Taliban for being involved in the attacks that inflicted heavy casualties on civilians despite the group’s declination.
Afghanistan sees a high level of violence everyday as the negotiation teams of the government and Taliban agreed on a 22-day deferment to discuss the agendas of the intra-Afghan negotiations with their leaderships.
On Thursday, the US Chief of Army Staff, Mark Milley, on a visit to Afghanistan, met the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. His spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi said that both sides expressed concerns on the high level of violence.
Milley assured US support to the Afghan security forces, according to Sediqqi. “Regarding the Afghan peace process, there is an urgent need for a significant reduction of violence.”
