KABUL: The US Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad said that Washington would continue its support to the Afghan peace process.
Khalilzad held a zoom conference with the Afghan foreign minister, Mohammad Haneef Atmar, in which both sides exchanged views on the peace process, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Friday.
“Khalilzad praised the restart of the negotiations in Doha,” the statement said. “Assured US support to the Afghan peace, permanent cooperation with Kabul regarding the counterterrorism, peace and stability in the country.”
US Charge the Affairs, Ross Wilson and Afghan ambassador to Washington, Roya Rahmani was also present in the meeting.
The second round of the intra-Afghan negotiations is expected to be held today (Saturday), according to the government negotiating team.
Last week, Khalilzad kicked off traveling to Qatar, Pakistan and Afghanistan to push for the acceleration of peace process.
He held meetings with some Afghan officials and influential figures in the country, including the former president, Hamid Karzai.
