KABUL: Afghan government with the UNESCO is to begin work to strengthen the Jam minaret in the central province of Ghor.
Mohammad Taher Zohair, acting minister for information and culture met the UNESCO officials in Kabul on Wednesday, emphasizing that the practical work of the Jam minaret strength begin soon.
The UNESCO registered the Jam minaret as a world heritage in 2002 followed by registration of the minaret by the ICESCO at the end of 2020.
Zohair argued that the UNESCO did not do enough to strengthen the Jam minaret in the past two years and that the minaret was not in good condition.
He asked the UNESCO to share their programs for the minaret’s strengthening in the next meeting to be held in late January.
The UNESCO officials in Afghanistan assured they would begin practical work on the project.
The practical work is planned to begin by March.
The Jam minaret is the second monument made of bricks several centuries back, but is in danger of collapse as it is located in a valley close to a river that is overflowed by torrential rainfall and flash floods.
