Taliban Reluctant to Reduce Violence, Abdullah Laments

Abdullah says Taliban have intensified violence and targeted-killings

KABUL: Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah said Saturday that the Taliban was reluctant to reduce violence in the wake of the second round of the intra-Afghan negotiations in Doha of Qatar.

Talking in the inauguration ceremony of the youth commission for the council, Abdullah said that the violence and targeted-killings have been intensified by the Taliban.

He said that the people expected the negotiating team of the government and Taliban to reach an agreement on reduction of violence but there has been no progress in the negotiations due to the militants insisting on continuation of war. . “But we are not disappointed about the peace,” Abdullah added.

He hoped that the youth commission would assist in facilitation of peace in the country.

About three-weeks ago, the Afghan and Taliban delegations restarted the negotiations. But sources privy to the issue said that there was no progress in the negotiations between the two sides.

To gain more leverage on the negotiation table, both the government and Taliban have intensified their offensives with staging of the attacks on each other. Earlier, some Afghan officials expressed concern on the deadlock in the second round of the intra-Afghan negotiations being held in Qatari capital of Doha.

The US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that Washington would review its deal with the Taliban.

Hamdullah Mohib, the National Security Advisor in a phone call with his US counterpart Jake Sullivan reaffirmed that Afghanistan “remains committed to our foundational partnership with the United States and we will work closely together on security, peace, counter-terrorism and regional engagement.”

Earlier, The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Washington would review its deal with the Taliban. He said that if the deal didn’t persevere the achievement of the past two decades, it would not conclude any result.   

The new administration sought the end of war, withdrawal of its troops and as well as prevention of the country from turning into a state for terrorisms.
