KABUL: The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) said that Afghanistan has earmarked 26 million US Dollars from the exports and sales of saffron in the current Persian year.
The ministry’s spokesman, Akbar Rustami, said Sunday that 21 tones of saffron were produced this year compared to 9 tons last year.
Mr. Rustami said 36 tons of saffron has been exported to India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia, USA, Canada and China in the past few years.
According to Rustami, Afghan saffron is now being sold in world markets and its smuggling was prevented.
Moreover, officials at the ministry said that a specific plan was made and shared with the economic attaché to further boost up the trade of saffron to the world.
Currently, one kg of saffron sold for 6,000 to 7,000 Afs in domestic markets.
It’s worth mentioning that local Afghan farmers have turned to the cultivation of saffron in recent years, a far more lucrative crop that has been recognized as the best globally for eight successive years.
