KABUL: Several packages containing tens of kilograms of gold were detected and confiscated by Tajikistan police on the border point. The packages belonged to Mirza Katawazi, deputy parliament speaker and were worth millions of dollars.
Sources close to the lawmaker, who were speaking on condition of anonymity, said Saturday that Katawazi tried to hide the issue.He is part of a parliamentary delegation planned to visit Tajikistan, according to the sources, who said it was not clear if the visit was related to the smuggling scandal.
Katwazi wanted to be included the delegation earlier to travel to Tajikistan to resolve the problem with Tajik officials, but his demand was not accepted.
The lawmaker did not answer journalists’ phone calls for comment on the issue.
A number of lawmakers and senators have been identified and arrested over illegal activities such as kidnappings, embezzlements, bribe demands and smugglings in the past and present periods of legislative terms.
