Trucks overloading damaged 40pc roads: Kabul Municipality

Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: Overloading of the trucks destroyed around 40 percent of roads in the capital city, said Kabul Municipality on Tuesday.

In a press conference here, the deputy mayor of Kabul City, Khojhman Ulomi, said that each truck entering into the capital is loaded with 60 tons to 100 tons goods which devastated roads in the city. He said the roads were constructed only for 25 tons. “The amount of fine decided by the Council of Ministers for overloading is insufficient. Every driver can pay it and easily break the rule. Most of the roads were destroyed due to crossing of the high tonnage trucks through the capital,” lamented the deputy mayor.

Ulomi said that as per the regulations overloaded trucks are finned Afs100 to 3,000. He termed the amount once again insufficient and said the municipality is not authorized to increase it.

“I have asked the relevant organizations to increase the amount of fine to Afs100,000 in order to prevent high tonnage trucks from overloading and damaging the roads. However, the proposal had not been finalized, so far,” he said.

Overloading of trucks with construction materials including steel, girders, bricks, cement and other materials are damaging the roads, said Ulomi, adding that roads in Silo and Pul-e Charkhi areas saw the most devastation.

Regarding preventive measures he said the municipality in cooperation with capital police has totally banned crossing of the high tonnage trucks through the capital.

“Only those trucks loaded with vegetables, fresh fruit, sand and bricks are allowed to enter, but they may also be banned in future from entering the city,” he said. He added that special areas should be build at the entrance of Kabul City for unloading of the trucks loaded with vegetables and fresh fruits.

He went on saying that the municipality has built four special stocks for supply of the heavy material at four gates of the city. The deputy mayor said that these materials would be brought into the city through small trucks.
