AT-LAGHMAN: In a conference held here, the speakers encouraged young girls to pursue education and use knowledge as weapon for social change.
Hundreds of young girls attended the conference on women empowerment organized by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) with the Directorate of Women’s Affairs, the Education Department and non-governmental organization Development and Change.
The conference put special emphasize on girls education. Member of the Wolesi Jirga from Laghman, Zifunoon Safay, and Legal Advisor to the provincial health department Brikhna Safay talked about women’s rights and their experiences.
Recalling her past to encourage the young female students to play active role in the society, Zifunoon Safay said that her father was a farmer with little income while her mother used to sell chicken and eggs to educate her.
She said that despite insufficient income and poverty she wanted to complete her education in order to become a successful woman.
Brikhna on the occasion said that despite numerous problems she was committed to continue her education with the hope to serve the nation one day.
The two speakers stressed on importance of education for girls and discussed different issues faced by the country’s womenfolk including insecurity, social taboos, discrimination and violence.
The UN’s recent report on the implementation of the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) law, released in December 2013, found that Afghan authorities registered more cases of violence against women in 2013, but the number of prosecutions and convictions under the law remained low, with most cases settled by mediation.
