18pc Decline in Female Media Professionals

AT News

KABUL: The committee for journalists’ safety, says the number of women journalists and other media workers had declined 18 per cent in the past six months.

The media safety body expressed concerns over increased worsening of the situation for journalists in Afghanistan.

Journalists and other media workers are part of the targeted killing since last year. Three women workers of the Enikas private broadcaster were killed by unknown gunmen last week in Jalalabad city, provincial capital of Nangarhar in the east as the latest targeted attacks.

The committee launched a survey with more than 90 media outlets in 34 provinces which explains over 300 women journalists and media workers lost their jobs because of security threats, targeted killings, financial problems and the Corona pandemic.

According to the committee’s statement, 1,678 women worked for the media in the first half of the outgoing Persian Year, while it has declined to 1,377 now with 18 per cent decrease.

321 of 1,377 women working now for the media are journalists and the rest work in the production and administration sections.

The statement says that most of women media workers are in Kabul followed by Herat province in the west and Balkh in respectively. Logar is the only province where no woman has media activities.

The provinces of Ghor, Nimroz, Sar-e-Pol, Laghman, Parwan, Kapisa, Uruzgan and Wardak also do not have women journalists and a few number of women work in other sections of media outlets.

No woman works in the media in the provinces of Nooristan, Kunar, Paktia, Paktika and Zabul, according to the survey that says two women who worked in media in Zabul and Paktia, left their jobs because of security threats.

Totally four women media workers were killed in targeted attacks this year all from the same outlet (Enikas TV) in Nangarhar province.
