Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: Ministry of Defense rejected the recent media reports about reactivation of the notorious Bagram detention center by the US officials and said the prison was under control of the Afghan government.
The ministry’s deputy spokesman Dawlat Wazeri in a telephonic interview with Afghanistan Times said the Bagram prison was under the control of Afghan authorities and the detention center was guarded by the Afghan National Army (ANA) troops.
It is while a local newspaper, Weesa, on Tuesday March 31 has reported that Bagram prison is under control of the US soldiers and number of prisoners is increasing day by day.
Wazeri termed the report baseless and said that hundreds of prisoners were released after proved innocent.
Wazeri while denying commenting on under custody of the innocence prisoners said that the innocent prisoners are released after assessment of their cases by a specific commission as hundreds prisoners were released after they were proved innocent.
On Wednesday, a number of Uruzgan tribal elders in a meeting with the ex-president Hamid Karzai had said that innocent prisoners should be released.
It is worth mentioning that Bagram jail was handed over to the Afghan government after an agreement between Kabul and NATO was signed in March 2013. Afghan officials that time said that they have took custody of 4,000 prisoners from the allied forces, and release 136 prisoners at the time.
