AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: A number of activists on Friday urged the government to stay neutral on Yemen war or else this stance will highly cost Afghans who have been fed up with war and calamity and now want to see brighter future in their country.
Members of Young Activists for Reform and Change (YARC), Ehsanullah Hikmat, told newsmen that they want the national unity government not to become a party in any conflict. “This will create problem for Afghans if the government takes any side in Yemen war therefore it should not take any stance in this regard,” he said.
He also said that Afghanistan is not in a position to support any state on conflict as it wants do so in Yemen war. “Saudi Arabia and Iran are fighting a proxy war in Yemen. Afghanistan should stay neutral in this war,” he suggested.
The United States is a close ally of oil rich Saudi Arabia and provides full support to the kingdom’s intervention in its neighboring country—Yemen.
The Presidential Palace issued a statement the other day that decision to back Saudi Arabia came in consultations with ulema—religious scholars, former jihadi leaders, security officials, analysts and elders.
Yemen has slide down into chaos since a Saudi-led coalition launched air strikes a week back against positions held by Shia rebels and their allies across the deeply tribal country. The kingdom has launched efforts to gather support from Islamic countries in its campaign to stem advances by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
