KABUL: Hundreds of families have been displaced as armed conflicts between the Afghan security forces and Taliban rocked the southern province of Helmand, officials said.
Head of Provincial Department of Refugees and Repatriates, Sayed Mohammad Amin said Tuesday that Taliban attacks forced over one thousand of families to leave their residences on Monday in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital city, and the Nawa district. According to Amin, the aid teams were sent to the site to provide assistance to the displaced families.
Helmand has recently witnessed an uptick in conflicts. Provincial Governor, Mohammad Nabi Ilham, said that the Taliban set attacks on Lashkar Gah and many other districts. The reinforcement arrived in the areas, he said, adding that the militants were pushed back.
He said that at least 106 Taliban were killed and 37 others wounded as part of the counter attacks by the Afghan security forces in the districts of Garmsir, Nawa and Nahr-e-Seraj.
