AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: National Directorate of Security (NDS) termed the presence of foreign militants as a threat to Afghanistan, but said that UN report has exaggerated the presence of foreign militants in Afghanistan.
The UN in a report recently said that Afghanistan has become safe haven for foreign militants. It added that almost 22,000 foreign fighters have travelled to Syria and Iraq, while 6,500 have come to Afghanistan.
Haseeb Siddiqi, a spokesman for the NDS, in an interview to Radio Azadi termed the presence of foreign militants as a threat to Afghanistan and said that they have killed and detained some prominent foreign insurgents in various crackdowns.
“Fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are active in Afghanistan, but we don’t confirm the figures provided in the report. However, the presence of the terrorist group is a threat to Afghanistan’s security,” he added.
Siddiqi said that security forces have killed and arrested several fighters of the ISIS in different operations.
Mirza Muhammad Yarmand, a military expert, also confirmed the presence of ISIS fighters in Afghanistan and said, after that Pakistani military started operations against militants in North Waziristan and tribal belt, foreign militants sneaked into Afghanistan. He also termed the presence of foreign militants as a serious threat to the country.
