KABUL: Ghizaal Haress, Ombudsperson of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has resigned from her position. She announced her resignation on Sunday.
“After nearly two years of serving as the Ombudsperson, and after handing in my resignation twice to the presidency, which unfortunately was not approved, I am stepping down from my position,” she said in a tweet.
Fighting corruption in a country that suffers from rampant corruption is difficult and risky, she said, adding, “But I am grateful for carrying out the assigned duties, despite immense challenges, with determination, transparency, and impartiality.”
“I had the privilege of working with the most dedicated and highly talented Afghans who not only fought corruption in the most difficult times and circumstances; but were also a source of knowledge and inspiration to me on a daily basis,” she added.
As I step down, I hope that in the not so distant future, Afghanistan has a unified vision for fighting corruption, she furthered.
She was appointed in August 2019 as the Ombudsperson. She was assigned by President Ghani to inspect the allegations of corruption for high governmental officials.
