KABUL: After the Taliban took control of the Torghundi Port in western Afghanistan, women are raising their voice in Herat to voice concerns about the blockage of the key transit port.
After the port was closed to trade, wheat flour production has stopped in Herat, said Head of Women’s Association, Abdul Zahir Rahimi.
Much of Afghanistan’s flour imports are via Torghundi port and Herat has been importing flour from Kazakhstan via the port in the last eight years. All imports have stopped after the port was captured by the Taliban.
He said they have resorted to using the flour reserves “which could exhaust any time if Torghundi port stayed shut”. He warned that there will be a crisis if the blockage continued.
The militants captured Torghundi port three weeks ago and imports from Kazakhstan to Herat have halted.
Rahimi even pleaded with the people to help out if they have flour reserves more than they need.
This comes as Taliban intensified attacks across the country, by capturing tens of district centres and key border crossings, sparking fears about swift territorial gains of the militants.
