KABUL: Foreign Minister, Hanif Atmar wants the international community to document the ongoing war crimes in Afghanistan and investigate the perpetrators of the crimes.
A statement issued Tuesday by the foreign ministry, said that Atmar shared his concerns over the war crimes in a meeting with Deborah Lyons, the UN secretary general’s special representative for Afghanistan and head the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), during which the top Afghan diplomat spoke about Taliban’s violating of human rights.
Atmar also condemned rocket attack on a UN office in Herat for which Taliban are blamed.
He asked the international community to use international mechanisms in investigating Taliban’s war crimes, calling in the UN’s human rights council to document war crimes.
Atmar urged cease fire and peace settlement as the priority of the people and government of Afghanistan, asking the United Nations and international community for a maximum pressure on Taliban to stop killing of Afghans.
Deborah Lyons also expressed concerns over Taliban’s attacks on the cities and killing of innocent civilians.
She said that a high rate of civilian casualties and a potential threat against international relief organizations are the major elements to ban humanitarian aids and development projects.
Separately, Atmar met with the NATO civilian representative for Afghanistan, in which the latter suggested the establishment of an academy to train young cadres for managing airports to the Afghan foreign minister.
