KABUL: The United Nations urges all war parties in the Afghan war to immediately agree on a cease fire.
Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said Tuesday that more 1,000 civilians have been killed or injured in Afghanistan in the past one month alone. He expressed sorrow over the high casualties of civilians in Afghanistan, calling on the Afghan government and Taliban to agree on an immediate cease fire to prevent more civilian casualties.
“Afghan children, women and men are suffering and are forced to live under violence, insecurity and fear every day. Serious concerns are over the lives of women and basic human rights,” Griffiths said in a statement.
He added that the 40-year long war along with climate shocks and the pandemic has made half of the Afghan population needy to urgent aids.
Griffiths added that over 40,000 people have lost their lives since the UN report on the situation in Afghanistan began.
The UN senior officials said that more than 1,000 people were killed or injured in the indiscriminate attacks in the provinces of Kandahar, Helmand and Herat in the past one month alone, clarifying that the situation in the country is a matter of great concern.
He assured about the continue humanitarian aids to all Afghan civilians, saying that the workers and distributors of the aids need a guarantee for a access with no obstacle.
Many parts of Afghanistan turned to battlefields since the United States began withdrawal in early May, with Taliban insurgents gaining much more advances in different provinces. They recently managed to seize six provincial capitals while battles are going on for capturing another five provincial centers.
