KABUL: Trader representatives and factory owners in western Herat province have expressed concern over Taliban’s ban on women workers in factories.
HameedullahKhadem, former head of the Chamber of Industry and Natural Resources (CINR) and a factory owner in Herat City, said MaulviZaheer, the Taliban in-charge of CINR, had stopped women from working in factories.
The issue was raised with the Taliban deputy governor who reversed MaulviZaheer’s decision and allowed women workers of factories to work.
He, however, said that MaulviZaheer again warned women against going to factories and said no woman was allowed to work in any factory.
He said 25,000 people were working in Herat factories, with women constituting 25 percent of them.
Zahra, not a real name of a women factory worker, said she was the bread earner of a four member family.
She stressed hundreds of women like her needed to work and earn livelihood and they have been in difficult condition now.
MaulviSher Ahmad Ammar, Herat deputy governor, said problems related to women presence in government institutions and allowing women to work in factories would be resolved in days to come.
