KABUL: Saudi Arabia is delivering its convoy of humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan via Pakistan.
Provided by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid Center, the aid is being transported by 200 vehicles from Pakistan to Afghanistan on Tuesday, according to Pakistani media.
The media reported that the aid amounted to about 1,920 tons, including food and non-food items that 280,000 people are expected to benefit from it.
Meanwhile, the aid agencies had earlier called on the international community and donor countries to send assistance to Afghanistan to prevent the current crisis.
Nearly four months since the Taliban seized power, Afghanistan is on the brink of a mass starvation that aid groups say threatens to kill a million children this winter — a toll that would dwarf the total number of Afghan civilians estimated to have been killed as a direct result of the war over the past 20 years.
Over 22.8 million people – more than half the country’s population – are expected to face potentially life-threatening food insecurity this winter. Many are already on the brink of catastrophe, according to an analysis by the United Nations.
