KABUL: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in a report called on the international community to not forget Afghanistan, as the country is facing a severe humanitarian crisis.
The statement said that thousands of Afghans cross borders every week in both directions, seeking means to secure their futures.
While we attend to multiple humanitarian crises around the world, the people of Afghanistan must not be forgotten,” the report reads. “This is why, today, millions of Afghans are internally displaced, while thousands of people cross borders every week in both directions, seeking means to secure their futures. So many of them have exhausted their coping mechanisms. They are in dire need of life-saving protection, livelihood and recovery support.”The statement added that millions of Afghans are in dire need of life-saving protection, livelihood and recovery support.
This comes as the United Nations Human Rights Council appointed Richard Bennett as the “special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan.”
The decision was made at 49th session of the human rights commission, a UN statement said.
The appointment of Bennett was welcomed by the US special envoy for Afghan human rights and women’s rights, Rina Amiri.
“Welcome the appointment of Richard Bennett as Special Rapporteur. This position is critical to monitoring & documenting the human rights situation in Afghanistan,” Amiri said. “It is imperative that Richard have unfettered access throughout the country & to all Afghans.”
