KABUL: The United Nations has allocated $10 million to thousands of people affected by a deadly earthquake last Wednesday in south-eastern Afghanistan.
More than 1,150 people were killed and about 2,000 people were injured with 10,000 homes partially or entirely destroyed in Wednesday earthquake, and five others were killed in an aftershock on Friday. The epicenter of the earthquake was in a region of arid mountains dotted with small mud settlements in Paktika and Khost province bordering Pakistan.
Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, announced on Twitter on 25th June, that the UN has released $10 million from UNCERF for the affected people of Afghanistan to help them with their immediate needs.
“Hundreds of people killed. Many more injured. Homes destroyed. Children buried in the rubble”, he wrote on his Twitter handle, extending his sympathies to the people of Afghanistan.
The UN’s assistance comes at a time when humanitarian organizations from all over the world are providing large sums of money to help the earthquake victims in Afghanistan.
The European Union allocated an amount of €1 million, while the UK provides £2.5 million and the amount for the aid provided by China is $7.5 million, for the quake-hit in Afghanistan. The earthquake that shook south-eastern Afghanistan on 22nd June with a high magnitude, destroyed over 10,000 houses, killing 1,000 and injuring over 1,500 people in Paktika and Khost provinces.
