Pakistan to import coal from Afghanistan

AT News

KABUL: Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has reportedly approved import of quality coal from Afghanistan in Pakistani rupees instead of dollars as the neighboring country is grasping at claws to save foreign exchange amid economic turmoil.

This is as the Taliban government have already stepped up coal exports to Pakistan and increased duties on sales as part of an attempt to boost up economy amid dire economic constraints in the absence of direct foreign funding.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday chaired a meeting on improving the transportation system of coal imported from Afghanistan in the country. He was shocked by the rising price of coal in the international market, saying it was the main reason for generating expensive electricity from coal-fired power plants in the country.

According to Pakistani media, import of coal from Afghanistan would save more than $2.2 billion annually in Pakistan’s import bill.
