Kabul: Dozens of female students protested against the closure of their schools in Paktia province. These girls demanded the reopening of their schools.
The pictures that are circulating on social media, shows that these female students, dressed in school uniforms, took to the streets in the city of Gardiz, the capital of this province, and demonstrated. They still want the Taliban to open the doors of schools and remove the restrictions in this sector.
About two weeks ago, some schools were opened for girls above the sixth grade in Paktia province. The reopening of schools in this province was welcomed by students and some human rights organizations.
After the reopening of schools for girls above the 6th grade in this province, the local Taliban officials said that these schools were not reopened by the order of the local Taliban officials in this province, but due to the continuous pressure of the people and local elders.
A few days after the re-opening of schools in this province, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesman, expressed ignorance about this in a press conference.
In response to the journalists’, Mujahid said that the reopening of the schools will be announced by the Ministry of Education, and whenever permission is given to reopen the schools, all schools in all provinces will be opened for girls. He emphasized that they are following up how to reopen schools in this province.
When these schools closed again by the Taliban, the girls in this province toke to the streets and protested against this decision.
Based on some reports, there is also disagreement among the Taliban leaders regarding the reopening of schools for girls.
After regaining control in Afghanistan, the Taliban closed the school gates to girls above the sixth grade, against their commitment.
Despite the repeated demands of the international community and human rights organizations, Taliban has not taken any action to reopen schools for girls.
