Kabul: Thousands in Pakistan’s khyber pakhtunkhwa area, took to the streets against the recent incidents of terrorism and violence, chanting slogans of “No more terrorism” and “We demand peace from the state” on Tuesday.
The mass demonstration came after an unknown assailant riding a motorcycle opened fire on a school van in Mingora, a central town in Swat. Police said Monday’s shooting left the driver dead and a student wounded.
Protesters, including students and teachers, kept the driver’s body on a main road and refused to bury it until their demands for preserving the peace were met.
The protestors had been demanding the arrest of the culprits behind the attack and warned of marching to Islamabad if authorities failed to meet their demands within 24 hours.
Speaking at the rally in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the leader of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), Manzoor Pashteen, accused the government of Pakistan of wanting to extend war and insecurity to the Pashtun-inhabited areas.
Pashtun politician Afrasiab Khattak also said in today’s massive protest in Swat, that restrictions on education in Afghanistan and Pakhtunkhwa were imposed by Pakistani generals to turn the Afghan homeland into a colony, but according to him, this dream will never come true.
No one has claimed responsibly for Monday’s attack, but residents accused the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban, of being behind the rise in violence in the area.
