Kabul: On the occasion of World Polio Day, the World Health Organization has said that Afghanistan is closer than ever to eradicating this disease.
Today, October 24, coincides with International Polio Day.
Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries that have not succeeded in eradicating polio. In these two countries, insecurity has always been a challenge to the vaccination. In the past, the Taliban prevented the implementation of vaccination in the areas under their control.
According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, 56 cases of polio were registered in Afghanistan in 2020. This number decreased to four in 2021.
This organization emphasizes that Afghanistan has a great opportunity to eradicate polio.
In its report, this UN-affiliated organization said that the campaign to fight polio started in Afghanistan in the early 1990s, and currently 46,000 health personnel are fighting this disease throughout Afghanistan.
Recently, the Ministry of Health of the interim government of the Taliban announced that the polio vaccination campaign has been launched in 22 provinces of Afghanistan.
According to the announcement of the Ministry of Health of the Taliban, this campaign covers 194 cities in the southern, southeastern, eastern, northern, and western and central provinces of the country, where the risk of the spread of the polio virus is higher.
Previously, six rounds of nationwide campaign and one round of sub-campaign have been implemented in Afghanistan this year.
