Kabul: Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan on Wednesday during a press conference while criticizing the forgetting of Afghanistan by the international community, stated the Afghans “didn’t expect support in perpetuity from the international community, but nor did they expect to be dropped off a cliff 14 months ago.”
He said during a press conference in New York that Afghan citizens, especially women and girls, feel abandoned.
Pointing out to the Taliban decision on not allowing girls above the sixth grade to go to school, and restrictions for women employees in the majority of government offices, he added that “there has been a major reversal in the rights of women and girls.”
Bennett, who recently traveled to Afghanistan, also said: “There has been crackdown on the media, and long-term impunity and lack of accountability.”
The Taliban’s foreign ministry rejected this report and calls it unrealistic which is only based on rumors and social media sources.
Taliban foreign ministry emphasized that the interim government is committed to the basic human rights of its citizens in the light of Islam and national values.
