Kabul: According to the deputy governor of Badakhshan province, three workers trapped in the Yavan gold mine are still under the rubble, and efforts to rescue them continue.
He said that another rescue team was sent to the area this morning.
On Thursday afternoon 3 workers were trapped under the debris following a landslide on a gold mining in “Khairabad Manzil Dasht” area of Yavan district, in Badakhshan province.
This event happened after the 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the province and its epicenter was announced in Jaram district of Badakhshan province.
However, source says that so far local people have managed to save at least two miners.
Moazuddin Ahmadi, head of information and culture of Badakhshan, said that there is still a possibility that the trapped people are alive.
He added that that machinery cannot operate in that area, which is stormy, snowy and impassable, and the people of the area are continuing the rescue operation with the help of the generator and the technical team.
These improvised mining sites in Badakhshan are prone to deadly incidents. At least 30 miners lost their lives in the Kohistan district of this province when a fragile tunnel inside a cave collapsed over them in 2019.
According to the US Geological Survey, Afghanistan has almost $1 trillion in untapped mineral reserves. But illicit mining, is stealing this amazing wealth from the region.
