Kabul: Food price inflation has continued to peak in Kabul markets, with onion and tomato prices skyrocketing to unprecedented levels.
According to Kabul residents high level prices are driven by merchants hoarding, especially during Ramazan, Tolo news reported.
The residents claim that the merchants hoard and sell the foods at high prices, and asking authorities to check the warehouses and don’t let the businessmen to store the properties.
Ahmad Nasser, a resident of Kabul, said “There is so much hoarding among traders that causes shortage in the market and the prices soar”
Meanwhile the Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock says that due to high demand and low supply, the price of onion and tomato has increased in Kabul markets.
Mirvis Hajizadeh, the Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock deputy said “prices will decrease within 10 or 15 days. I suggest to the traders to consider the situation during the holy month of Ramadan, because consumers having difficulty to afford and buy a bag of onion for 500 or 600 afghanis.”
According to the Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock, Afghanistan import onions from India, Turkey and Egypt, and in the next two to three weeks, the onions from Kunduz and Nangarhar will also enter the market.
