KABUL: Officials from Afghanistan and Turkmenistan have discussed ways to deepen the bilateral trade ties and to expand transit architecture inside Afghanistan during a recent government-level meeting.
During a grand meeting between Afghan and Turkmenistan foreign ministry and transport officials and representatives of customs, trade, and oil and gas sectors, issues of mutual benefits including trade and transit were widely discussed. The parties reportedly reflected on the need for expanding mutual cooperation in transit and cargo transportation through Afghanistan as part of a bid to ease oil and gas imports from Turkmenistan.
Transit cooperation between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan is widely deemed to have a paramount strategic and economic importance for both nations. Both states have a geographical location that contributes to the development of transport links and the transportation of goods.
A litany of infrastructure projects has been implemented in recent years as part of a plan to build transit infrastructure, including construction and modernization of highways, railways and roads and optimization of customs services.
This is as the president of Turkmenistan Sardar Berdimuhamedov had earlier said that opening the Lapis Lazuli international transport corridor would help improve regional trade and transport networks. Afghanistan is part of the Lapis Lazuli international transport corridor.
