KABUL: Canada has brokered a deal with the United Arab Emirates to resettle at least 1,000 Afghan refugees languishing in the UAE since the withdrawal of the US forces from Afghanistan in August 2021.
Canada’s Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship said that Canada will fulfill its commitment to resettling at least 40,000 vulnerable Afghan nationals by the end of this year.
Fraser lauded the United Arab Emirates’ cooperation and support in transferring Afghans and said Canada is fully committed to making the most of every opportunity to support these vulnerable Afghans in their transition to a better life in Canada despite challenges.
Human rights activists, religious minorities, journalists and women activists are the groups of people who are prioritized in Canada’s humanitarian resettlement program, according to the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada.
After entering Canada, Afghan refugees will benefit from the financial support of the resettlement program (RIP) and will have access to temporary services of housing, education and health.
Since the collapse of the former Afghan government and the return of Taliban to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, Canada has transferred at least 32,000 Afghans and is committed to making it to 40,000 by the end of this year.
