KABUL: Taliban authorities have conducted another public execution, marking the second such incident since their return to power in August 2021. A convicted murderer was executed in the town of Sultan Ghazi Baba, in Laghman province.
The provincial information officers stated that the public execution aimed to serve as a deterrent and educate others. According to the Taliban-run Supreme Court, the man had been found guilty of murdering five individuals after undergoing investigation by three courts.
The statement did not provide specific details about the execution method. The execution was carried out in the presence of regional Taliban officials and had received approval from the supreme spiritual leader. The leader had previously instructed judges to implement punishments in accordance with Sharia law.
Approximately 2,000 people, including the victims’ relatives, witnessed the execution, as confirmed by an official from the provincial information and culture department. The execution and the sentence were conducted in compliance with Sharia law. While public executions were more prevalent during the Taliban’s first rule from 1996 to 2001, the most recent occurrence took place in December of the previous year in Farah province.
