KABUL: The Canadian government announced on Friday that it has given its approval for a new legislation aimed at facilitating humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. The legislation has received royal assent and is now in effect.
Under the authorization regime, a broader spectrum of activities will be supported, including the provision of health services, education, assistance in livelihood development, promotion of human rights, and facilitation of immigration activities such as the resettlement and safe passage of refugees.
“Canada’s commitment to the people of Afghanistan remains unwavering, even after the fall of Kabul. Whether it’s providing aid or welcoming refugees, we stand by the vulnerable Afghans,” stated Marco Mendicino, the Canadian Minister of Public Safety.
He further added, “This legislation ensures that we can continue fulfilling our commitment while upholding Canadian law and steadfastly opposing terrorism.”
Canada’s Minister of International Development Harjit S. Sajjan expressed the urgent need for assistance in Afghanistan, given the dire humanitarian crisis and the deterioration of democracy, human rights, education, and healthcare in the country. The Royal Assent of C-41 signifies that critical aid will continue to reach those most in need and enable Afghans to rebuild a brighter future, he said.
According to the United Nations, a staggering 28.8 million people, which accounts for two-thirds of Afghanistan’s population, require humanitarian assistance in 2023. This represents an 18% increase compared to 2022.
