AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Following the primary court’s verdict on Farkhunda’s case, a number of rights activists the other day censured the court and argued that the case was handled politically and without due process.
Kabul’s 3rd district primary court on Wednesday sentenced four of those involved in Farkhunda’s murder to death and 16 to 18-year imprisonment.
Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC), Amnesty International and Transitional Justice Group said the decision was hasty and premature, calling for more attention in Farkhunda’s case.
Amnesty International researcher, Hurya Musadiq, said the decision was more political than a just one. She said justice was less provided to Farkhunda’s case. “We want the case to be investigated thoroughly, and names of policemen involved in the case should be included among culprits,” she added.
The activists said the case was adjudicated without making stern efforts to arrest three main suspects who were recently identified by police but are still at large.
Member of Transitional Justice group, Abdullah Ahmadi, said the court has announced its verdict at a time when the three main perpetrators are still on the run. He urged security forces to detain them as soon as possible. “Other facts about the case will be revealed after arresting of the three men. The court should change its decision,” he asked.
Raising similar remarks about the court’s verdict, a spokesman for AIHRC, Rafiullah Bidar, said all the suspects should have been punished—even those who were found innocent due to lack of evidence.
He said these kinds of decisions will open way for more crimes in the country.
