KABUL – Amid a dramatic surge in crime, Washington, D.C. is now more dangerous than Afghanistan with high rates of homicides, sex abuse and thefts. The recent killing of Nasrat Ahmad Yar, a Lyft driver and father of four who had previously served as an interpreter for the U.S. military in Afghanistan, underscores the failure of leadership and justice in the US capital and the American society.
According to recent statistics highlighted by Washington’s WJLA-TV Channel 7, homicides in DC have increased by 12%, sex abuse incidents by 53%, and vehicle thefts by a staggering 110% in May compared to the same period last year. The overall crime rate has risen by nearly 30%.
With rising crime rates, Washington’s crime statistics are beginning to rival those of a country struggling with the aftermath of war. This is as Afghanistan has seen a decline in crime involving homicide, abuses and thefts. While Afghanistan has been plagued by decades of conflict and instability, recent crime surges in Washington, D.C. have raised concerns about the safety of the U.S. capital. The failure of leadership and a flawed understanding of justice contribute to this alarming situation. In a disturbing revelation, it was discovered that the District has been more focused on ensuring victims of car thefts pay for the speeding tickets accrued by the criminals using their stolen vehicles, rather than prioritizing the apprehension and prosecution of the thieves. This is as the District’s U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Matthew Graves, appointed by President Joe Biden, has failed to prosecute a staggering 67% of those arrested in 2022. He also cited issues such as the city’s crime lab lacking accreditation and police body-camera footage subjecting arrests to heightened scrutiny.
