Taliban downplay threats against prosecutors in Afghanistan

AT News

KABUL – The International Organization for Transitional Justice and Peace (ITJP), a US-based organization, has reacted strongly to the Taliban’s stance on the safety of prosecutors in Afghanistan. The ITJP issued a statement on Monday, accusing the Taliban of consistently ignoring threats made against prosecutors.

The ITJP rebuffed the Taliban’s statements, asserting that the group falsely accused both the ITJP and the “Prosecutors for Prosecutors” (PFP) campaign of aiding personnel in leaving Afghanistan and being involved in human trafficking. These accusations were made by the Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in a recent tweet, where he claimed there were no threats against prosecutors and judges in Afghanistan.

Contrary to the Taliban’s denial, the ITJP stood firm, presenting credible reports and evidence of numerous cases where prosecutors were killed or assassinated by the Taliban. The group also documented instances of the Taliban releasing criminals from prison.

According to the ITJP’s data, since the Taliban took control, more than 26 prosecutors and individuals linked to the justice system have been killed or assassinated in Afghanistan.

The organization clarified that it operates with complete impartiality, independent of any political affiliations, with its sole purpose being to seek accountability and justice for victims of international crimes and human rights violations. The ITJP vehemently denied any involvement in human trafficking, countering the baseless allegations made against them. Instead, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting victims in their pursuit of safety, justice, and a peaceful future.

Looking ahead, the ITJP declared its unwavering determination to continue advocating for “justice, peace, and human rights for all.” It also called upon the Taliban to halt their ongoing crimes and human rights violations, urging them to respect the fundamental rights of the people of Afghanistan.
