KABUL – Taliban-controlled Afghanistan now ranks as the world’s second-largest hub for displaced population, accommodating 6.55 million IDPs, making it the second most affected nation after Syria.
The UNDP in a report revealed that Afghanistan is currently hosting 6.55 million IDPs, placing it second globally for the highest number of displaced people, following Syria. As of December 31, 2022, the persistent conflicts and violence within the nation have led to an internal displacement of over 4.39 million individuals. Additionally, approximately 2.16 million people have been forced to flee due to various disasters within Afghanistan.
Furthermore, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has previously reported a significant rise in the count of internally displaced individuals within Afghanistan. Their estimates suggest that the total number of internally displaced people in the country is approximately six million.
Recently US envoys for Afghanistan, Thomas West and Rina Amiri, reiterated their call for an inclusive government in Kabul. Currently under Taliban control, Afghanistan’s women’s rights have faced severe restrictions since the group took power. Ahead of the Doha summit, West and Amiri engaged with representatives from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan in Astana to discuss the Afghan situation.
