KABUL – In a solemn announcement today, former President Hamid Karzai conveyed his deep sorrow at the passing of Prince Mirwais Zahir, the son of the late His Highness Muhammad Zahir Shah, the revered father of Afghanistan. The sad news emanated from Kabul, where the nation mourns the loss of a cherished figure.
“Prince Mirwais Zahir, a symbol of patriotism, humility, and kindness in our great nation, has departed this world, leaving behind a void that will be keenly felt by all. His contributions and character were a source of inspiration to many,” Karzai said in a tweet.
Born on January 25, 1957, in Kabul as the youngest of six children to the late King Mohammad Zahir, Prince Mirwais received his education at prestigious institutions such as Istiqlal High School in Kabul and Harrow School in Midsussex, UK. His passion for art led him to further his skills at the Academia delle Belle Arti in Rome, where he had the privilege of working and training alongside renowned artists like Sinisca and Jean-Pierre Velly. He also fostered a lasting friendship with the celebrated Italian artist Luigi Ontani.
In the early 2000s, Prince Mirwais Zahir served his country in various government capacities, including as a special advisor to the Ministry of Information and Culture and as the chair of the Afghanistan Cultural Heritage Protection Commission.
Former President Hamid Karzai paid tribute to Prince Mirwais on social media, describing him as a “patriotic, humble, and benevolent figure of the nation.” The entire nation joins in extending heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the grieving family and friends of the departed prince.
Today, we mourn the loss of Prince Mirwais Zahir, who passed away at the age of 66 in Kabul, leaving behind a legacy of art, culture, and service to Afghanistan.
