Russia’s Lavrov calls for strengthening global order

AT News

KABUL – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the need for a renewed commitment to international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

Lavrov stressed on several key points related to global politics and the state of international relations. He noted the ongoing shift towards a new and more equitable multipolar world order, reflecting the cultural and civilizational diversity of nations. He stressed the importance of this shift, driven by the global majority advocating for a fair distribution of resources and respect for cultural diversity. On the contrary, a select group of Western nations, led by the United States, seeks to maintain its dominance through neo-colonial methods.

The Foreign Minister criticized the Western nations for disregarding international commitments, citing past instances of planning military operations against the Soviet Union, the breach of promises regarding NATO expansion, and the spurning of security guarantees for Ukraine.

Lavrov expressed concern over joint military exercises conducted by the United States and its European NATO allies, including scenarios involving nuclear weapons use. He highlighted the dangerous expansionism of NATO in the Asia-Pacific region.

Lavrov suggested that the United States and its Western allies have assumed a global role akin to the Monroe Doctrine, attempting to exert influence and control over other countries’ foreign relations, which contravenes the UN Charter’s principles.

Russian Foreign Minister emphasized the need for upholding the principles of international law, including the sovereign equality of states, non-interference in internal affairs, respect for territorial integrity, and the self-determination of peoples.

Lavrov called for the reform of global governance mechanisms, including an expansion of the UN Security Council to better represent the interests of Asian, African, and Latin American countries. He also urged reforms in the UN Secretariat to reflect the real global clout of nations.

Multipolarity and Collaboration:

In conclusion, Lavrov advocated for the spirit of multipolarity and international cooperation, asserting the importance of respecting international law and the UN Charter’s principles.

The Foreign Minister’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly highlighted Russia’s commitment to a more balanced and just global order based on the principles of equality and cooperation among nations. The call for a strengthened adherence to international law underscores the significance of maintaining peace and stability in an evolving world.
