KABUL – Top Iranian officials in a meeting with a Taliban delegation, led by acting first deputy prime minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar on Sunday in Tehran, vowed support for Afghanistan’s security and commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s development.
Baradar, responsible for the war-torn nation’s economic affairs, met Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian as well as Ali Akbar Ahmadian, chairman of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
The two sides discussed political and economic relations, “effective” coordination between their respective nations, water resource management, transit agreements, and enhancement of Afghanistan’s imports and exports through Iran.
In an exclusive meeting with Baradar, Ahmadian emphasized the historical ties between the Iranian and Afghan nations, noting that Iran had supported the Afghan people during times when their country was occupied by foreign forces. He highlighted the need for enhanced cooperation in various sectors, including trade, industry, transportation, agriculture, and the utilization of Iran’s water resources, all of which would be beneficial to both countries.
Additionally, the Iranian security chief addressed the situation in Gaza, condemning Israel’s actions against Palestinians and advocating for increased solidarity in the Muslim world to address the ongoing conflict.
The Taliban official, in response, expressed Kabul’s determination to combat terrorism and enhance security along the Afghan border. He reassured that Afghanistan poses no threat to its neighboring states and emphasized the importance of improving trade and economic cooperation with Iran, particularly in transit and air transportation sectors.
Furthermore, the Afghan official reiterated their commitment to upholding agreements with Iran, particularly in the area of water resources, and underscored the mutual benefits of promoting economic cooperation in border regions and joint investments between the two nations.
