KABUL – Pakistani security forces on Sunday thwarted a group of armed fighters near the northwestern border with Afghanistan, resulting in the death of four militants, including a high-profile individual known as Ibrahim, as revealed by Pakistani military sources.
The engagement transpired during an intelligence-based operation conducted in the Khaisoor area of the North Waziristan district. According to a military press release, the exchange of gunfire between Pakistani forces and the fighters led to the elimination of the four militants. The operation also uncovered a substantial cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives. Ongoing efforts are underway as security forces continue to comb the surrounding areas in pursuit of any remaining hidden fighters.
Highlighting their commitment to eradicating terrorism, the military stated, “The Security Forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country.”
North Waziristan, once a notorious safe haven for militants, underwent extensive military operations after the devastating attack on an army-run school in Peshawar in 2014, resulting in the deaths of over 150 people, primarily schoolchildren. While the army previously declared the region cleared of militants, sporadic attacks persist, fueling concerns that the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban, may have sought refuge in Afghanistan and is regrouping there.
It’s worth noting that the Pakistani Taliban, although distinct from the Afghan Taliban, maintains an alliance with the latter. The Afghan Taliban assumed control of Afghanistan in 2021 amid the final stages of the US and NATO troops’ withdrawal after two decades of conflict.
