KABUL – Former President Hamid Karzai has expressed gratitude for $110 million grant from Global Partnership for Education to rebuild schools and improve education for Afghan girls and boys. He thanked international organizations and friendly countries for their help and cooperation and urged the Taliban government to open the doors of schools and universities to girls and to provide necessary educational facilities for Afghan children.
The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) has approved grants totaling $110 million to support the education of children in Afghanistan. Over the next two years, this funding will help girls and boys continue to attend community schools and learn basic skills in public schools across the country. More than 7.66 million children across the country are expected to benefit.
“We are very pleased to be able to continue our support for education in Afghanistan”, said Laura Frigenti, Director General of the Global Partnership for Education. “This funding, provided through UNICEF and Save the Children, two partners with extensive experience working in complex contexts, will help the hardest-to-reach Afghan children access the education they need to become productive members of society and build a better world”, she added.
The $59.5 million funding, overseen by UNICEF, aims to ensure that children in remote and hard-to-reach areas, particularly girls, continue to attend community schools, in particular by providing them with school supplies and textbooks and paying the salaries of community teachers. The program will provide new textbooks, teacher guides and other school supplies to approximately 15,000 public schools. More than 28,000 teachers and principals will receive training to strengthen their mathematics and reading teaching skills, as well as their classroom management skills. An assessment of student learning in the early years will also be conducted.
The $50 million in funding, overseen by Save the Children, will focus on community education. It aims to ensure that children living in remote areas can continue to learn in safe spaces. This includes the renovation of school buildings and the rehabilitation of water and sanitation points, as well as the purchase of equipment and textbooks for classrooms. The funding will also make it possible to train young women to become primary school teachers.
