KABUL – In response to rising terror threats, the US Department of State has issued a stern warning, advising American citizens to avoid travel to Afghanistan. Citing concerns over terrorism, the risk of wrongful detention, kidnapping, and general criminal activity, the State Department emphasized a complete prohibition on travel to the region.
The advisory highlighted the suspension of operations at the US Embassy in Kabul since the political changes in August 2021. Consequently, the US government cannot provide emergency consular services to its citizens within Afghanistan. The statement underscored the presence of multiple terrorist groups, with US citizens being specifically targeted for kidnapping and wrongful detentions. The Department expressed a particular concern about the risk of wrongful detention by the Taliban, which has reportedly harassed and detained aid and humanitarian workers.
Notably, the Department of State cautioned that even individuals registered with appropriate authorities for business purposes faced a high risk of detention. Activities of foreigners may be viewed with suspicion, leading to unclear reasons for detention.
To address the immediate threat, the State Department urged US citizens currently in Afghanistan to depart via commercial means if feasible. However, the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, refuted the claims, asserting that Afghanistan is secure, and there is no threat to foreign nationals. The statement also criticized the Taliban for not allowing the United States to conduct welfare checks on detained US citizens, emphasizing the potential for lengthy detentions, limited access to medical attention, and the risk of physical abuse during such periods.Top of Form
