KABUL – In a strong address to the UN Security Council, India has emphasized the pressing need for an inclusive and representative government structure in Afghanistan. Despite global attention waning, India remains deeply concerned about the situation in its neighboring country and called for concerted efforts to combat terrorism, drug trafficking, and safeguard the rights of women, children, and minorities.
Speaking at the ‘Situation in Afghanistan’ meeting, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, underscored the shared priorities that include immediate humanitarian assistance, the formation of an inclusive government, and counterterrorism measures. India continues to withhold recognition of the Taliban-led government, advocating instead for an all-encompassing administration in Kabul and a commitment to preventing Afghan soil from becoming a breeding ground for terrorism.
The Taliban’s failure to uphold promises, particularly regarding women’s rights, has drawn global condemnation. The restrictions imposed on women, compounded by a deteriorating humanitarian situation and recent natural disasters, including a devastating earthquake in October 2023, have further escalated concerns.
Kamboj stressed the crucial role of the international community in maintaining focus on Afghanistan, urging prioritized humanitarian aid. Despite challenges, India has actively contributed material assistance, educational scholarships, and developmental projects across all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. The commitment to supporting the Afghan people remains steadfast, with India affirming that its humanitarian assistance will persist.
As the international community grapples with evolving geopolitical dynamics, India’s call for immediate action seeks to rekindle attention on Afghanistan’s complex challenges and foster collaborative efforts toward sustainable peace, stability, and inclusive governance.
