KABUL – A suicide bomber blew himself up near provincial governor’s office in Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz province, on Sunday, injuring three security guards. According to a Taliban official, the attacker triggered his suicide vest while attempting to breach the governor’s compound.
The incident unfolded as the assailant, facing resistance from security personnel, detonated his explosives. The spokesman for the Taliban’s interior minister, Abdul Mateen Qani, shared these details on X, formerly known as Twitter. Notably, no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, though the Islamic State group’s affiliate has been escalating assaults in Kabul and other parts of the country since the start of the year.
The Islamic State group, a major rival to the Taliban since their takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, has intensified attacks on various fronts. In recent years, the group has targeted schools, hospitals, and mosques, in addition to launching attacks on Shiite areas across the nation. The absence of immediate claims raises questions about the complexity of the security landscape, as Afghanistan continues to grapple with the aftermath of the U.S. and other troop withdrawals.
