AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: A number of women activists the other day called for larger presence in media in a bid to rise their voice for defending their rights.
Participants of the event said a number of traditions and security threats have discouraged women to work in media as journalists and other media-related positions.
“Female journalists are still faced with social, environmental and security problems in the country,” woman activist Masuma Mhammadi quoted by TOLONews said.
She said that inclusive measures are required to remove the challenges and improve the role of women in media as they are capable of developing effective news stories.
Civil society institutions and several female journalists attended the event.
A civil society activist, Farima Ahmadi, said women should roll up their sleeves, come forward and take the advantage of existing opportunities.
Fatima, a journalist, said as a new journalist she feels that there are a number of obstacles in her way. According to her, the hurdles include wrong traditions in the society and security threats in parts of the country.
Freedom of expression is among main achievements of ex-President Karzai’s government. The National Unity Government has pledged to maintain the achievement and support newsmen in the country.
