Kabul: Turkish police have reported the detention of 40 Afghan asylum seekers discovered during a cargo truck inspection in Amasya city. Media sources revealed on March 30th that these refugees had concealed themselves in a food-carrying truck traveling from Ağrı to Istanbul. Turkish authorities plan to deport these Afghan refugees after completing administrative procedures. Reports suggest that many of the detained refugees, including women, were aged between 18 and 25.
This occurrence coincides with an uptick in the detention and deportation of Afghan refugees from Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan in recent months. Previously, Turkish media covered the detention of hundreds of Afghan refugees for lacking residency documents in Turkey. The Ministry of Interior of Turkey disclosed that nearly 50 individuals have been detained across various Turkish cities in the last three months on charges related to human trafficking.
In 2023, the Turkish Ministry of Interior reported the detention of 68,687 Afghan migrants in the country, with some subsequently deported. Turkish authorities have reiterated their commitment to ongoing operations targeting the entry and detention of illegal migrants throughout Turkey. Official statistics indicate that over 300,000 Afghan migrants reside in Turkey.
