KABUL – A bomb blast in Kandahar, the political hub of Taliban government, killed at least one person and injured three others on Monday, according to local authorities. The bomb, planted in a handcart, exploded on a road leading to Kabul. Victims were civilians, and an investigation is underway to find those responsible, Kandahar police said.
Reports from multiple sources suggest the attack targeted Taliban security forces, with a higher death toll than the official count. No group has claimed responsibility, but suspicion falls on IS-Khorasan (IS-K), a regional Islamic State affiliate known for targeting Taliban members and minority Shi’ites.
The bombing follows an IS-K-claimed gun attack on foreign tourists in Bamiyan, central Afghanistan, which left six dead, including three Spaniards, and several others injured.
Militant attacks are rare in Kandahar, where Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada resides, ruling through strict religious edicts. The last significant IS-K bombing in the city occurred in March, killing three government employees outside a bank.
