Kabul: New rounds of rainstorms and flooding have claimed 17 lives and injured 11 others in northern Afghanistan’s Faryab and neighboring Sari Pul provinces over the past two days, local officials reported on Saturday.
In the Lawlash district of Faryab province, 12 people have died and 11 have been injured due to downpours and flash floods since Friday, according to provincial government spokesman Esmatullah Muradi. Women and children are among the victims, Muradi added.
In Sari Pul province, the severe weather has resulted in the deaths of four women and a child over the past two days, confirmed Habibullah Masror, spokesman for the provincial government.
Heavy rains and flash floods have claimed hundreds of lives, destroyed thousands of homes, and left many more homeless in war-ravaged Afghanistan over the past month.
